Hey !

I just finish my installation of freenas, everything it's ok.
I have create my volume with my 4 hd (4x2to) with raidz1.

I ask myself, what happen if one of the disk failed ?
I found this commande zpool status -v to check the disks stats.
So i try to unplng one of my disk, i try zpool status -v but the result is : the unplug disk is "online" but it's not true !

How can i do to really know the health of my disks ? How could i be alert when something wrong with the raid ?

Thanks a lot!

Yep. Well known and documented all over the forum.

Wait for FreeNAS to be built on FreeBSD 9.x and then it will work properly. zfsd doesn't exist in FreeBSD 8.x. You can monitor your drives using nightly logs or SMART. Nightly logs will show really high error rates on drives that are unplugged/failing. SMART will report an email that says that the disk was queried but no response was given. Just make sure your email is setup, SMART emails are setup, and that you check your email regularly.

No clue about NAS4Free. I don't use it, never have, probably never will. If you want to know I suggest you ask them. But if they're as bitter over there as some of us here about being asked the same questions every 2-3 days they'll respond with "try it and find out" or ignore you completely.

I have configure SMART, to check the hard drive / configure smtp to send me email (email test is ok)
But when i unplug disk nothing happen, no mail...What i'm doing wrong ?
Is there a different way to simulate a drive failure ?

You'll get the email the next time the system queries the hard drive. The default is 30 mins but it will be at whatever interval you set.

Ok, i get it.
The explication was simple.
I have a raid controller on my mother board and they disks on the controller are not very weel detected by the controller. So when i unplug a disk on the controller nothing happen BUT when the disk is on the mother board it's fine, i unplung and i received an email from SMART.

Thanks
