Almost complete beginner (with FreeNAS) here - please bear with me...

I have just setup a (physical) FreeNAS server with 4 2TB disks (no RAID controller, as it is my understanding that ZFS likes to have direct access to the disks).

Somewhat foolishly I have elected to created a single striped volume across the fours disks. After some further reflection I think I should give up some storage capacity for security. In other words I'd like to be able to loose one disk without data loss.

What's my best best at this stage ? Ideally I'd like to change my config without loosing the content of my current storage (it is obviously far from full so it can shrink without issue).

Thanks for your suggestions / advices !

Your only option is to backup the data, recreate pool choosing raidz1 (if you're happy with protection against single drive failure), and restore data. You can't 'shrink' a stripped pool to a redundant pool.

And why is this in the howto section? I certainly don't see this as a howto for anything.

Ok - thanks for the heads up.

Well how about "how to change my ZFS settings" ? ;)

Sure. I still don't see the actual howto part of the post. I don't even see the need for a howto on how to recreate the pool, as all that information is in the manual.

In other words, the "howto" section shouldn't be asking questions. It's for posting "howto's".
