I do have a Norco server chassis that I am using for this, so I have plenty of airflow, but I'll look into those Dell HBAs as a replacement. Ideally, I'd like to get enough to allow me to fill out the rest of my HDD bays.

I use two like this to give me enough ports to run the drives in my 24 bay chassis:

This is likely due to the controller write back cache being enabled. If you can disable this do so ASAP, that any any kind of read ahead, scrubbing, and any other RAID card nonsense.

I'd make a recommendation but I still have no clue how many bays your case has so that makes it kinda hard to help on that one.
