I am setting up my first NAS :) so far it has been quite the learning experience but I know once I have everything set up and working I will be very happy.

Here is my problem.

I am setting up a "Public Media" share that I want anyone that is connected to my netork to view. Basicly I am going to have movies and some pictures in there that I want people to ONLY view aka read.

I have created the dataset with the permissions as follows:
Owner (User): my main pc name
Owner (group): nobody

Mode:
read O/G/O
write O/G
Execute O/G/O

type of ACL: Windows / Mac

Now, I know that in order to stop a "nobody" user from deleting I have to uncheck Execute from the other group and the Group from group but the thing is I can't once I set the ACL to Win/ Mac! I cannot figure out why that is. I have even checked UNIX for ACL, made my changes, saved, then went back in to the permissions, set the ACL back to Win / Mac and they just change back to how they are above.

Another thing I have tried is actually changing the permissions from windows on the folder but that also did not work.

I hope I am making sense. If there are any other questions please let me know and I will try my best to explain.

Thanks for reading, hope you can help.

See my post here, I pretty much had to do the same thing:

Awesomeness!!!

Yea I think that is pretty much want I want. just like your "Common" drive, I want to have a media drive with the same permissions.

Just a question though, the ACL should be Windows/ Mac correct? If so, why is it that everytime I select that option it grays out the boxes and does not keep them like I want them?

Thanks for the help :)

Hi Luciano,

I left the ACL as UNIX and it works fine under Windows. I do not have a system using Mac O/S to test.

Cheers!

Hey Shan,

I am stuck... I will upload some pictures of what I have. I have no idea why its not working so I'm hoping you can see something for me to change.

So far:

I've created my main user (Support.com), this one has no issues with R/W/E.
I've created my regular users (peuple I would not mind adding to my list of users, these people will be able to Read and Write but not delete)
And I've also created Guest. These are the people I want to just b able to view.

I cannot get access to the shares on either my user laptop or a guest laptop, just my main PC.

I hope this all makes sense and we are on the same page.

Thanks again for the help.
