How to observe storage patterns of an application

I've got an existing small scale FreeNAS 9.1 box doing backups. Is it possible to analyze the disk traffic patterns on this existing FreeNAS instance to determine storage patterns of my application? For example, is there any way to confirm typical record or file sizes, or if the read/write patterns are generally random or sequential?

Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.
