Hi,
I would like to know if there is any way to log CIFS user activity (file creation, deletion, modification, etc.) on FreeNAS 8.3.1 either internally or externally.
Internal smbd & nmbd logs are not kept for more than a day or two which is not enough for my needs.
I set up an external syslog server for my FreeNAS server and it work nicely, except CIFS activity is not logged through syslog.

Any help, even a different method to log file activity will be appreciated.

The Logging Configuration Options of http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/using_samba/ch06.html describes the available options.

However, the FreeBSD version of Samba has "SYSLOG=off: Syslog support" off by default and FreeNAS currently does not override this default. If this functionality is important to you, check to see if a ticket already exists on support.freenas.org and create a feature request if it does not.

Okay, thanks for the reply.

Looking a the support a similar ticket was previously opened and closed as "wontfix", even if I don't understand exactly why.

Let met know if you want a new ticket specifically requesting for Samba logging through syslog.
