when i vi /var/log/messages

it offen show' s logfile turned over due to size>100K

so the maxsize of messages is 100K?

Do you have older log files in /var/log? If so, you can read them with bzcat.

thanks lots.

yes ,i can see the older logfiless in /var/log (messages.0,messages.1,messages.2,messages.3,messages.4)

but the oldest one(messages.4) only contain the log of yesterday......

i can't see the log of tow day ago or more

i don't need to check the log everyday, and i won't to copy logfiles to other place everyday
in general,i only check the log when somebody tell me his files disappear or be modify worngly by others .

one day's logfile is less than 2M (my freenas has 5 logfiles of one day and all is less than 300k),monthly it only to use less than 100M.. USB devices (system) is 8G,it's enough for store logfiles of one month even of one year.

This would make a good feature request (ability to set # of saved logs). If you create one at bugs.freenas.org, post the issue number here.
