Hello,
I currently have a jail setup running a ZFS Pool. I'd like to back it up to either another ZFS Pool or an external drive.

Any suggestions on how to do this easily?

Thanks for your time.

Thank you for your answer.
As I understand it, a snapshot is only good restore to a previous state, not necessarily a backup.
Please correct me if I am wrong.

You can replicate a snapshot to another pool with "replication" tasks, of with your own "zfs send/receive".

Hate to bring up an old thread but what about those of us that don't yet use ZFS? I've been just running an Rsync script once a month to move it to other drive sets (internally and externally of the machine it's running on). I'm guessing this is about the best way to do so since I can't do a ZFS snapshot.

Anyone?

Well, you're about to be a significant minority(if you will even consider yourself a FreeNAS user). FreeNAS 9.2.1 was the last version to use x86. And I believe UFS support is about to be removed from the GUI too. So to me it sounds like a situation that will resolve itself in a few months as people that are still using UFS/x86 will find themselves a new filer OS to use, or will upgrade the problem away.

I wrote "yet" in bold as I'm currently waiting for six more 2 TB drives to show up so I can switch to ZFS, hence me asking how people backup current jails without having the ability to take snapshots. Not a very helpful post being that you're an admin. But thanks for the info.

And I'm supposed to know all that because you put "yet" in bold??? Really?

Not a very intuitive post being that you're a user! But thanks for the info.

(See what I did there?)

So if I snap shot the jails that are on Vol1. Remove the 2 x 1tb HDDs that make up Vol1 and put in a new 1 x 3tb HDD, I can then restore that snapshot to the new drive?

You can only restore from the snapshot if it's available and the snapshots are stored on the disks that they're snapshots of. If you want to restore the snapshot to another volume you'd either need both volumes available at the same time or replicate the snapshot to a common location first,

Also, using a single disk for a volume seems kinda pointless with ZFS.

I agree with fracai, one drive isn't really going to help you much.
That being said, I'm assuming that's why you are concerned about backing up your jails, since you have 1 point of failure.
correct?

Sounds like you need to either build something more redundant, or determine what data is most important and back it up, off that 1 point of failure.

Sorry to be such a dolt, but if you have a copy of your jail, how would you install it on new FreeNAS install?
