how long can a drive be missing from a pool before that drives data is irrelevant?

ive had a controller failure and im running a z2 in a degraded (one drive offline) state due to controller failure and not having enough sata ports.
ive ordered a card, assuming i can maintain a z1 pool until the card arives will the offline drive still be able to online or will it want to wipe the disk and resilver it?

just curious :)

Should be fine but is it wise? Depends on the value of the data in the pool, your backup strategy, and your appetite for the time needed to rebuild it all, should the pool fail.

Despite multiple backups and a Z3 pool, I’d take it all offline when dealing with a hardware failure like that. I’d worry about the Borked controller potentially silently corrupting the pool. Yes, a scrub should detect that but the ensuing repair / replacement process for corrupted files might be less than fun.

thanks for the advice :) yeah i should have been more clear, ive removed the controller and am now using onboard ports, but i have a 7 disk array and only 6 ports, so the only "risk" as such is the array is now a z1 essentially until i get the controller
