How Inherit Owner works?

Inherit Owner: if checked, ownership for new files and directories is inherited from parent directory rather than from the user.


Say I have a directory that is a CIFS called X that is own by root and there is a sub-directory that is also a CIFS called Y own by user Joe. If I check the box for Inherit owner for sub-directory Y, is sub-directory Y considered as the parent directory or is X considered the parent directory?

What I want to achieve is that any file or sub-directories created in Y is to be owned by Joe.
Note: There is no check boxes checked for X.

Few things:

1. Inherit Owner doesn't work quite how people think and afaik it's not well documented for the laymen.
2. It has been such a problem child that 9.2.1.6 has it removed. You can't even enable it anymore except by manually adding the setting.
3. I don't think anyone on this forum fully understands how it works. So you probably aren't going to get a good explanation. ;)
