I have a RAIDZ2 with a failed disk and I had a spare already physically installed and connected but not part of the vdev. I added it as a hot spare to the pool, then detached the faulted drive.

Now I have this. How can I move sdc into as a replacement for sdd?

Oh wait, I see a resilvering has started. Is this automatic at this point and I just wait for it to complete?

Yep ; wait for the re-silvering process to complete.

If you add a hot spare, yes, it's automatic.

After the re-silver, you have a choice:
  • Replace the faulty disk, and after the replacement is re-silvered, your hot spare becomes available again for another failed disk.
  • Remove the the faulty disk, which will cause the hot spare to become a permanent part of your pool. You can later add another hot spare, (or even the faulty disk's warranty replacement if you get one).
