Hi. I am new to the community although I have read a lot off and on about NAS. All my equipment is old by computer standards and that's where I get the most enjoyment/frustration from. I like to see what I can get out of older computers coupled with newer ideas.

That can be tricky because newer ideas typically assume a certain amount of newer hardware. With FreeNAS I'd avoid going with equipment older than Westmere / Nehalem.
