Help with Bhyve VMs

So I am trying to setup a persistent ubuntu 16.04 LTS server vm but everytime freenas reboots and the vm starts back up, or sometimes seemingly randomly, the vm will boot to the iso install page instead of into the OS. It seems like it must be losing the info on the virtual hard drive I even changed the boot order to be 1. Drive 2. CD/DVD-ROM 3. EFI shell and it still goes to the iso installer.

Edit: Also when reinstalling it says that there are active partitions which I assume are my vm running I just cannot access it?

Do you really need the CDROM to be attached permanently? Why not just remove it?
