Currently I have my Plex server (along with SickRage and CouchPotato) running on a CentOS machine. While I've been very happy with it so far, I definitely need better storage point than just a local drive, hence my reason for building a FreeNAS box. In terms of capabilities for the FreeNAS server, it's mostly just to serve as an iSCI storage point (or NFS, haven't decided on that yet). While I have most of my build decided on, I'm still trying to figure out what I should use for my cpu/motherboard combo. The cpu can definitely be on the low end as it will not be doing anything besides running the ZFS pool. All the transcoding for Plex will continue to be done on the CentOS box. Here is what I've decided on so far:
Case: Fractal Design Define R5
PSU: Corsair RM650
Drives: 6x Western Digital RE4 2TB
Memory: 2x Crucial Ct2KIT102472BD160B
USB: SanDisk Cruzer Fit CZ33 16GB
What I've been looking at doing for the motherboard/cpu setup is this:
Motherboard: Supermicro MBD-X9SCL-F-O
CPU: Intel Pentium G2030
While as far as I can tell this should be a decent setup, I'm seeing a lot of X10 boards out there. My question is: Is there a big enough difference between X9 and X10 that I should get that instead? Again, this machine is pretty much just going to be a network storage point and that's it. If there's a compelling enough reason to switch please let me know. I'll probably need to look at different memory as well since I've seen the thread on compatible memory for the X10 boards so any input there would be appreciated.
Also to head off the questions before they begin, I know that the RE4 drives and 650 watt power supply are a bit overkill. I was able to receive them free from work (still new!) and that's why I've gone with them. If I were to buy them myself I would've gone with something cheaper, but it's hard to argue with free, as long as it's good quality stuff.
Thanks in advance for the help. Please don't rag on me too much if this is a terrible build. I've done my research, I promise, but this is till a bit new for me.
