I've been a FreeNAS user for about 6 years. I am still using a 2009 version of the software which has been working flawlessly on my network since I set it up on an old eMachine that I had.

Interestingly I just retired that first eMachine FreeNas system a little while ago all the time running without an issue, lack of capacity finally killed it. The posts on this forum managed to answer every question I've had so far.
