Got so fed up trying the Qnap to behave I gave up. Attractive hardware but I never got the software doing what I wanted. After searching the net I found I could (probably) install Truenas on it. So I'm trying this now. Registered here because it is very likely I'll need it to get everything working.

Can you please provide your Qnap model number and disk topology?
It is a "TS-453 Pro" according to the label. This is a 4 bay model and I got 4 Seagate 2TB "NAS HDD" in it. The OS is on a Kingston 120GB with USB3. That is not ideal as I get errors when installing and booting.
The idea is to go to raid5. That would give me about the same as I have in the desktop, also a raid 5 with 2TB HD's. So now on to reading the Truenas documentation to get it up and running.

This has 2GB RAM by default, you need at least 8
