HBA works (mostly) but sas3ircu sas2ircu cannot find it

I have an SBA with a LSI SAS3008 controller chip that I picked up from amazon -its been over a month, so I can't return it :-(. I have been getting disk errors (on mulltiple disks) since I installed it (it takes days for them to manifest and I have tried changing cables, moving disks between the HBA connectors, reseting cables, etc) so I figured I'd check into updating the firmware before trashing it. The boot screen shows it has MPT3BIOS-8.15.00.00:

When I try to find it once it has booted, I can't:

Is it going to be possible to flash my hba?

One thing I forgot to mention is that when the computer boots and the HBA screen comes up and says "press CTR-C to enter BIOS (or something to that effect) I am never able to get CTR-C to work. I had the HBA installed in a much newer motherboard and I was able to enter BIOS on that (but then I had other issues such as not able to boot unless a video card was installed.)
