Hello, I have an existing zfs Raidz1 nas setup that I'm am looking to backup and rebuild using the ZFS encryption. My concern is the hardware, currently I'm using a E35M1-M PRO with 8gb of ram its worked very well but I'm wondering if this type of hardware would work for migrating over to FreeNas and enabling the encryption.

Thanks!

Hi ZugZug,

Afraid you're right to be concerned. That CPU (E-350) is most likely is not up to the task of an encrypted pool (ninja edit - expect about 25-30MB/s throughput) but more importantly you've got no ECC support on that board. There's folks who will phrase it less kindly than me, but suffice it to say you're putting your data at risk by doing that.

I like the Warcraft reference though.

You shouldn't use encryption unless your CPU supporte AES-NI.. which it doesn't.
