Hi, I am going to build a nas on a budget of £500 and am going to use it for file storage/access in my home and streaming 1080p mkv (normal file size between 10gb and 20gb) to a tv. I have chosen 2x wd red nas 4tb drives (total price of £270) for raid 1 but am wondering on what other components I need. I am thinking of 8gb ram and an i3 4160 cpu with an antec earthwatts 380w psu with a basic motherboard but would the cpu be over kill for what I need as I probably won't be transcoding? I would also like to keep the nas wattage down to a minimum. Any help would be appreciated. Dom

Lenovo TS140 or Dell T20 with an additional 8GB ECC DIMM. Selfbuild in that price range is impossible.

Hi, cheers for the reply. Why would a self build in this price range be impossible? I already have a case from an old pc I could use.

Search for the new ''budget" thread by @DrKK (or generally through the forum), it'll explain why...

I think the key part here is the definition of "basic motherboard".

Do not confuse that with "el-cheapo motherboard".
