Hard Drives not detected DL385 G7

Hi everyone,

I am trying to get this server up and running but I am having issues with the HDD detection.

The server (DL385 G7) has 8 HDDs, all set as Raid 0 (on the RAID Card). Initially, all works well, and I can create a Pool.

Upon destroying the Pool, all the HDDs as part of that pool disappear. The only way to get them back is to remove the HDDs (all of them, irrespective of being in the pool or not) and plug them back in, but this should not be the case.

geom disk list (correctly displays all of them)
gpart destroy -F /dev/da# (is successful)
camcontrol rescan all (correctly sees all of them successfully)

**Yet no drives show up unless I unplug and re-plug them all physically**

Any pointers?

Right. What directions were you following that told you to do this?

What's all the noise about HBAs, and why can't I use a RAID controller?

1) An HBA is a Host Bus Adapter. This is a controller that allows SAS and SATA devices to be attached to, and communicate directly with, a server. RAID controllers typically aggregate several disks into a Virtual Disk abstraction of some sort...

Got ya. looks like changing to JBOD or HBA would help. Let me give that a try.

No. Pulling any card that offers to present the drives as "JBOD" and installing an IT mode HBA with the proper firmware will help.
