Version: TrueNAS-12.0-U6 (latest, fresh Installation)

Host: ESXi 7.0U3 - ASRock Rack EPC612D8A - Onboard Marvell 9172 HBA, AHCI Mode (1x 12TB HDD WD Red)
VM: 4vCPUs, 16GB Ram, 16GB HDD, PCI Device Passthrough (Marvell Controller)

Problem:
- HDD is not recognized from TrueNAS installer. (only disk from ESXi datastore)
- HDD is not recognized after TrueNAS boot in Menu --> Storage --> Disks

HDD is visible in Bios. (Mode: AHCI)
ESXi Controller Passthrough is active.
Controller should be compatible with FreeBSD.
Controller is shown in TrueNAS 'bootlog' (shell: more /var/log/messages)

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

I guess it's going to happen eventually, so I'll do it now...

You need to stop using the RAID card (even if it's in a non-RAID mode)... if you care about any of your data

Separately to that, you're going to need at least 2 separate disk controllers to pass one through to the VM properly.

I'm going to say that the 9172 is probably okay. I believe it's one of the Marvell controllers that is known to work acceptably under FreeBSD. I remember this mostly because it was on the C2750D4I, which contained two different Marvell controllers, the 9172 and 9230. One of these did NOT work correctly under FreeBSD, the other did, and eventually a driver hack made them both work, as I recall. I would think the 9172 likely to work on bare metal, but it would be good to test that on bare metal. Be aware that SATA port multipliers should not be used.

However, for PCIe passthru, ... maybe, maybe not. The general issue is that passthru didn't work reliably a decade ago. For example, most systems pre-Sandy-Bridge are unreliable. Supermicro X9 systems with common datacenter chips like Intel AHCI/SCU/ethernet, LSI HBA, etc., generally do work, but a lot of other vendors with Sandy/Ivy had somewhat hit-or-miss (more on the miss side) support. Part of this seems to be that there needs to be proper setup in the BIOS, and few vendors were making the effort. Dell and HP seem to have missed on this front until Xeon v3-v4, and you're talking about AsRock Rack's early boards here, so I would easily believe that they may not support reliable passthru. This can show up in strange ways, such as the controller probing but not actually working (which this looks like it could be), etc. ESXi is also somewhat picky about the hardware that it will set up for passthru, and if you've tinkered with ESXi in order to "make it work", that's often a sign that it isn't going to work well. Some stuff was blacklisted for a reason.
