I have a server that has been rock solid on FreeNAS-11.3-U5. There's a few users of it in the family so we all used used root for the SMB mounts.

I know upgrading to 12 will break that by security design which is fine, I am just wanting to make sure my plan for this weekend goes accordingly.

Backup config, screenshot as many settings as possible.

chown to new user/group to own ALL data in the 2 pools
ensure a non-root user can have webGui access
11.3-U5->12.0-U8.1, using https://download.freenas.org/12.0/STABLE/U8.1/TrueNAS-12.0-U8.1-manual-update.tar
12.0-U8.1->13.0-U1.1, using the UI upgrade.
Once installed, reconnect SMB shares with new user created earlier.
After SMB is working under that account, start delegating permissions to other groups/accounts.

Probably will not upgrade the pools themselves until I've been on 12.0 for quite some time. I do not run any jails or anything on this server and have since moved them to another system. This system functions as storage only accessed by Windows clients with BackblazeB2 backup on a schedule. Seems like all of that should carry over.
