I'm using FreeNAS 11.2U8 because I don't want to learn a new UI. My email was working until I changed my gmail password a few months ago. It seems like Google reset the block on my "unsecure" app. I had previously found a forum post saying that you could set up an app specific password for gmail, even if you didn't use two factor authentication. I was never able to find the setting on my gmail account though.
Today I reset the password on my FreeNAS and google blocked the login again. I found this information:
I read text as requiring two-factor authentication to get the app specific password. I bit the bullet and set it up. Copy/paste of the password google sends you works. I set up "freenas" as the app and voila:
