Yes and no.

Why it's a No answer: The SAS controller in that system is based on an LSI 2108 chip and doesn't appear to work with FreeNAS 8. It's also an integrated card (right on the motherboard). "Officially" that system also only holds 2 HDD's too.

Why it's also a Yes answer: Technically speaking, FreeNAS8 would work fine on it, but you're going to have to install a supported SATA/SAS card. If you don't mind ditching the CD drive (which you wouldn't need for a FreeNAS build anyways) and using two 5.25 to 3.5 adapters, you can stick a total of six HDD's in the system.

Do you think that SAS controller can be disabled to AHCI and just use it like that? And just let ZFS hanlde the RAID?
If not, could you recommend a good/cheap pci express x1 that will work?
