As I'm researching FreeBSD and FreeNAS, one of the items I don't quiet understand is whether I can run FreeNAS on FreeBSD. Obviously FreeNAS needs to run from a bootable device. In addition to experimenting with FreeBSD, I want to run a web server and a few other things on the box.

How do I install FreeBSD either on a separate device from FreeNAS, or ideally on the same device where FreeNAS is going to reside? This device is separate from storage devices. Once FreeBSD is installed, how do I
boot into FreeNAS since it doesn't work on a petitioned disk?

What is the recommended approach for restoring to previous working configuration since I will make mistakes and FreeNAS isn't the best candidate for visualization?

Thank you.

What the what?!

Unless you plan to dual-boot those two OS's (not-advised), I'd suggest you look into installing freenas and then creating jails to run whatever you want. Freenas runs freebsd, but it's a full system install, not an application.

You seem to be confused on what freenas is. It is not an application that you install. It is an appliance. It is it's own OS. You can't 'run freebsd along side it'. It runs freebsd already.

For what you describe, install freenas, boot into it and learn about the jails system.
