I have recent purchased a new laptop and was thinking about putting freeNAS on my old one. The functionality I want is to be able to back up my new laptop and be able to store/retrieve files through the internet. That being said my laptop only has 2.5gb of RAM, it's a Dell latitude d520. Is freeNAS a bad fit for my purposes? Is ther something else I should look into?

Thanks,

Hi Mreed3,

Sounds like you might just be better off with an external hard drive & a Crashplan account.

You certainly can do what you are wanting to do with FreeNAS, but external access can be tricky (not a FreeNAS problem....port forwarding can be a pain for those who have never done it). I'm not sure FreeNAS does WOL so if you just want the laptop\filer stashed away out of sight and have it only "wake up" when you need it that might prove challenging.

WOL has been discussed here. Google "FreeNAS WOL".
