Hi all;

Do I need FreeNAS snapshots if VEEAM is performing backup jobs?

I am using Hyper-V with VEEAM 9.5 connected to FreeNAS 11.3 SMB share. The SMB is connected as a network Drive X:\ to my Hyper-V host, where VEEAM is installed to perform backup jobs to this drive.
7.5 TB of SMB storage on FreeNAS
My current VEEAM backup jobs are configured to use about 3TB of this.

I had been keeping 30 snapshots on Freenas 11.3 and noticed a disk warning 80% full. For now, I have deleted all the snapshots as they were using up as much drive space as the backup jobs.

What is the general consensus on doing FreeNAS snapshots for a VEEAM local backup?

You should protect your vbk files against human-error and malwares.
ZFS snapshot is very good protection for that purpose because they are read-only.
To protect your data from a ransomware attack you should keep the longest archive that you can store.

If you use Veeam Backup 9.5 Free Edition, you should upgrade to Veeam B&R 10.x Community Edition, to benefit the incremental backups. It will extremely reduce your backup sizes.
