Hi to all,

Actually, I have some Synology NAS, 2x 12bay, 2x 4 bay...Disk size are all 6 To, maybe I upgrade it later, all current volume are composed of 2x SATA disks in RAID 1.
Synology hardware is very expensive and I would like to migrate my Synology Diskstation 2x12 bay to a 24bay chassis at a decent price.
FreeNAS seems an interesting opportunity, so I plan to make my own setup.

So I need your precious advice to have correct setup.
My needs: SMB with Windows workstation, DLNA for TV, future needs VMs/Containers on the NAS

I list what I need to buy below :

> with ? my suggestion, tell me if it's a good idea or suggest me a better ;)
> in bold the hardware that I have, I would like to reuse, if it's a bad idea, please tell me
> when it's blank, I need your advice to complete

Many thanks for your help.

Boot Drives: Samsung SSD 850 PRO 1TB
It will work, but it's a waste--the boot device can't be used for anything else. As to the rest, take a look at the hardware recommendations guide and go from there.

You understand that the existing file structure can't be imported into FreeNAS. You must wipe the drives and format with ZFS, the native filesystem for FreeNAS.
