Hi.

i read on this forum that users had installed freenas on a qnap device.

I want to to that as well.
Do i understand that it overrides the QTS FW, and it install's on a HD in the NAS?

1- plug-in a bootable usb with freenas
2- reboot the nas, and enter the BIOS
3- choose "boot from USB"
4- run the installer, and select source HD
5- reboot after sucessfull installation
6- DONE, freenas is installed on the qnap.

Are the above steps correct?

Does freenas offers an actual php, 7.x.x in this case.

Thanks

Did you try the steps? If so, did it work out for that hardware?

The above steps are not correct. You should not overwrite QTS.
Anyways the QNAP TS-253 has only a 512 MB DOM Flash Memory, but FreeNAS requires a 8GB boot device.
Instead, you need two USB keys:
  • one for the FreeNAS installer
  • another to be the FreeNAS boot device
Warning: FreeBSD BTX (included with FreeNAS 11.2 ) does not work with some QNAP NAS.
Therefore you have to use GRUB instead (include with FreeNAS 11.1u7)

If you want to install FreeNAS on a QNAP NAS, you should look at this thread first

I just did this with a TVS-1282T.

A) Purchased a USB 3.0 32GB disk.

B) rufus to burn the FreeNAS ISO to a 2nd USB 3.0 stick

C) Boot to USB (F12, on my box)

D) install FreeNAS to 32GB stick. On mine, there's a 512MB storage device (shows as da0) that has the QNAP OS/Firmware on it. Leave it alone ;)

Enjoy FreeNAS. Unplug the USB stick when done and rebuild with QNAP when ready.
