So, I am hammering away at my system and everything is running smooth!!
  • Resilvering an 8 3TB drive Z2 array
  • Scrubbing a 5 4TB drive Z1 array
  • ZFS send/receive 10TB of data from Z2 array to Z1 array
  • running VitualBox with many Windows VMs for HTPC servers etc.
All the above is running at about 15% CPU utilization and all of the VMs are running great!! HTPC server is running at full speed.

I just think it is very cool to be able to do so much stuff on one system without any issues. Thank you FreeNAS team!!

Cheers,

Using ZFS send/receive from an 8 drive Z2 pool to a 5 drive Z1 pool averaged 107MBps for a 10.1TB transfer.

Using ZFS send/receive from a 5 drive Z1 pool to my new 12 drive Z2 pool (2 6 drive vDevs) averaging ~400MBps for the same 10.1TB set.

Is the performace increase due to the 2 vDevs only or also due to having the proper number if disks in a Z2 set (6)?

Cheers,

If you moved data form production pool to some backup and then back, then I would guess that difference could be due to pool data fragmentation. First send/receive could fix fragmentation, and after that the second one run faster.

Not sure what caused the speedup but I am resilvering another drive (3TB) in the new 12 disk Z2 pool (2 vDevs) and it is reporting a 1.04 GB/sec resilver speed after 1 hour. Estimated time to complete of about 4.5 hours total.

My old 8 disk Z2 pool (1 vDev) took over 30 hours to resilver the same amount of information and always was a bit of a dog. It was created in an early version of 8.x so it was not a new pool.

And, who the heck came up with the word "resilver?" Autocorrect gets its nickers in a knot every time I try to type about ZFS... :)

Cheers,
