I am building a new freenas 11.2 using older mobo ASUS P8Z77-V PRO and spare LSI SAS card

For CPU .. I have a choice to use either Intel i5-3570k or Xeon E3-1240 V2
I don't plan on using this freenas for anything other than disk (ex. no vms)

Both CPUs have 4 cores but the Xeon has 8 threads (4 on the i5)
benchmarks show mixed bag

So not sure which would be better use here ? or if either would work same ?

Depends on the system board, but I would go for the Xeon to get ECC memory support.

Thx Chris .. good idea .. but the ASUS P8Z77-V PRO doesn't support ECC memory

Just trying to identify any significant differences between using one or other CPU

I would suggest selling the hardware that doesn't support ECC and get a system board like the one in this build list:

Only my opinion, but ECC is worth the trouble for the system stability.

good point on ECC .. and this build is super close to the links you provided .. I believe I just need to swap out the mobo and ram to ECC
and I have everything else .. so will give this a try
Thx for updates

That looks really good to me. When you put it together, post some photos.

I don't have mirrored boot drives .. but I could add as well
But seems like it's easy enough to restore (backing up the config) if this ever happened

Any significant advantage to mirrored boot drives .. other than no downtime in the even of failure ?
I don't use my setup 24x7 and seems easy enough to restore o/s if went down

Nice build looking to do something very similar myself, could you tell me where you sourced the SuperMicro X9SCM-F motherboard? There are a few on eBay but all outside of the UK.

FYI, I did have some poor performance issues using a 10gbe card on this SuperMicro X9SCM-F motherboard

basically I had to rollback the bios to rev 2.0c
instead of what shipped which was rev 2.3 to resolve

just in the event you plan on using a 10gbe card
