I am planning to build freenas system. My primary requirement is initially to store all my photos, videos and files safely using zfs and also take backups and never to lose any data in the future. Additionally run Plex and kodi and transcode to run 4 to 6 jobs to 1080p and I want it to run 4K transcoding in the future. We have 5 HDTVs and 4 laptops and 4 ipads. Also Run virtual iOS and Windows using jails. At the same time future proof my system for future use for a least another 5 to 6 years. My son wants to dual boot and use it as a gaming machine and use GPU. Is this possible to use Freenas for gaming, as I have not seen any mention of gaming with freenas.
Please advise on the proposed hardware that I have selected for the built. Will it work for freenas, gaming is secondary.

You are choosing a e5 series processor. I ask why? If you don't plan on going over 32GB of RAM then you can get a e3 processor. Your motherboard is also a poor choice since it's a gaming motherboard. Your power supply is way overkill, you only need about 400w.

Can you read the suggested hardware sticky please? You can get your build for about half the price you are spending now.

I say get a Supermicro X10 mobo and keep the E5-1650 or go down to the E5-1620. Both are beasts and can run all what you need. (I like a system I can build and forget about)

Gaming + FreeNAS? no... just no. If you are building a FreeNAS system you should expect to keep it up 24/7/365.

And yest to SweetAndLow, read the Hardware sticky.

Thanks for your suggestions. I had read the forums several times , confused on what is right for me and that is why I want your help. My 14 year old thinks that this can be used for gaming and somehow wants to incorporate his requirement. My primary goal is to use for photos, videos and multi media server.

Nope, zero gaming can be done with freenas. You will need to build 2 systems if you want to do that or switch to a different operating system.

Better to buy your 14 year old son a gaming pc and a dedicated FreeNAS machine unless you want to run UnRAID which can run a virtualize windows for Gaming which is kind of cool, but in reality, a Xeon E3 system can work ok. Also, you should use a SuperMicro motherboard for a Xeon E5 processor. For the price of most X99 boards, you can get a SuperMicro X10 which natively support Xeon and ECC. AsRock Rack also has a Xeon E5 board that is mATX as well.

Does the X10SRA use the 2011 narrow ILM? I know the X10SRL does since I have one. If so, does the CM Hyper 212 support that? If not, I'd stick with the 2U or 4U active Supermicro heatsink.

Motherboard could be a bit better like the X10SRL since that one has audio and other unnecessary stuff, but will likely work. That board is more of a workstation board and not a server board, but I could not see why you could not use it.

Can I host a website within a Jail.

Yes as long as you know how to properly harden and secure it to make it internet facing.

What are your plans for the SSD you have listed?

I plan to use it as a cache/parity

Might want to do some more reading up on that. I'm no expert on ZFS but from what other more knowledgeable members have posted your intended use case scenario and memory capacity would not benefit from a cache drive and it may actually have a negative impact on performance.

Thanks a lot for the input. From what I saw on different forums people had mentioned it will improve performance. If it is not then I will not buy it and save the money.

Kingston 32GB DataTraveler ($10.51) USB boot up
Don't go all cheapo on the OS drive... :P Grab a used SSD 32 GB SSD (or two) from ebay instead. /As long as you can spare the sata ports and power connections.

I plan to use it as a cache/parity
Nah, not going to do you any good. If you want spend the money on RAM. FreeNas loves RAM. Once you get to 96+ GB, then it may make sense.

Mirfster, I will buy the 32 gb ssd and also add another 16 gb Ram. Thanks for the suggestion. I wanted to buy the hardware last week but was waiting for all of the more experienced Freenas users to comment so that I can make a better system.

Yeah any old cheap SSD would be a better choice than a USB boot drive for peace of mind.
