FreeNAS Hangs at Shutdown (indefinitely)

Alright, so I've been using FreeNAS for about 2 weeks now (and am immensely enjoying not only the server, but the technical challenge as well), and had it stable for a little over a week. Unfortunately, I've been having a minor problem that's been bugging the hell out of me - the machine won't reboot / shutdown without hanging. I took a picture of the error I've been getting (see below), but being as it is that this is my first real experience with *nix (other than ADB and Android dabbling), I have no idea what exactly any of these lines actually mean.

A little bit about my setup: I'm running the x86 8.3 build (although I literally just noticed I could use the x64 version, ugh) off of a 4Gb Kingston thumb drive, with a 2Tb WD Green and a 1Tb Seagate USB hard drive as one volume ("Media"), with a random 160Gb Maxtor as a seperate ("Sys") volume for jail, plugins, etc. All of these disks are ZFS format, no RAID (yet) or anything else 'fancy'. I run MiniDLNA, but that's really the only plugin I use. I'm not really sure what else is relevant about my setup, but if there's anything else that would be helpful, don't hesitate to let me know.

What hardware are your hard drive attached to? Since they're all detaching like that I'm thinking something is weird with your SATA controller. Is your controller set to AHCI mode?

By hardware, do you mean what type of motherboard do I have?

The 160Gb and 2Tb drives (both internal) are connected to SATA going directly to the MoBo. The 1Tb Seagate is a USB external drive, which is plugged into one of the 4 USB ports on the back of the tower.

Also, is the AHCI mode a BIOS function, or a setting in FreeNAS?

AHCI is in the BIOS(if the option is available to set) per the FreeNAS manual. Guess I know who didn't read the manual ;)

Ah, ya got me there my friend :) I pretty much read the quick start guide and was on my way (and a pretty basic surface-level Lifehacker article). I'll check the BIOS as soon as my girlfriend gets done watching this show (that's streaming from the NAS) and report back.

I hightly recommend you give the manual a read. It's interesting as heck and very well written. I had never used FreeBSD and all I needed was the manual and a couple of forum searches to verify what I thought I knew and I was up and running without a hitch the first time.

Well damn, sorry to be that guy, I know how that goes. I've just ordered another 2Tb internal, so once that arrives I'll probably just reset the whole system using the 64-bit FreeNAS (so I can use Soundcloud, Sickbeard, etc) and move forward having RTFM :)

Also, in my defense, I did at least Google before asking - so at least you didn't also have to give me a "let me google that for you" too haha

LOL. As for adding another drive, it's not really possible with RAIDZ1 or RAIDZ2. Read my primer presentation and you'll understand.

Waiting for your guide to load, looks like good stuff! The community is lucky to have someone like yourself that's dedicated enough to put guides like this together, for sure. As far as resetting my system, I was planning on using the "nuclear option" - as in, formatting all my disks and starting with a blank slate, and hopefully reading a little more in-depth will help me set it up correctly this time and allow me a more "hands-off" experience once I do get it set up. I do appreciate you taking the time to respond to my noobishness :)

While you're doing your reading, do a forum search on the use of USB drives.

The 1Tb Seagate is a USB external drive

And, read section 1.4.2 about RAM needs.

Ah, good to know about the USB drives. Everything I'd read previously regarding USB drives specifically related to incompatibility with NTFS (excepting just to transfer files to the NAS), I didn't catch the overall problem with them "in general".

As far as the RAM goes, is a 4GB RAM ceiling totally out of the question for x64 even if I use UFS instead of ZFS? If that's in the literature, I apologize, I must have missed it. I guess it's not a huge deal, I was just really interested in the other available plugins, none of which seem to have (current or continuing) x86 support :/
