I can boot up freenas fine, but after a day or so it dies with the error:

Code:
frame 0xfffffe0000356000 timed out command 0x1BF8400
error 60 in callback from mfi_send_frame

After a reset its back up fine. Version is FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201512121950

You'll get more help if you let people know your system specs, which might help identify the problem.

FreeNAS requires a minimum of 8GB of RAM.

BTW, we don't recommend virtualizing a production server, but if you really want to do it, please read the stickies on the subject.

It's been running OK for the past few years.

Almost certainly a problem with your RAID array.

This will sound like carping, but here goes anyway ... now would be a great time to make sure you have a tested backup of everything you care about.

Ive got a weekly backup to a USB hard drive. I'll probably delete the array from my PERC and hopefully that will pass SMART status to freenas (apparently it support pass-through/JBOD for those disks not part of an array). Then i can tell if a drive failed.

yes I have. it's just a small NAS at home. It's been running OK for the past few years.
They're called minimum requirements for a very good reason. There are alternative NAS solutions out there that might appeal more to your limited resources.
