I have a FreeNAS that last successfully backed my and my colleagues Macs up last night. Today however I found out that it has shut down, the only thing it showed was:

May 22 13:50:35 freenas afpd[2781]: out of asev slots
May 22 13:50:35 freenas afpd[2781]: out of asev slots
May 22 13:52:49 freenas afpd[2781]: out of asev slots

After trying to reboot FreeNAS I got the following:

Then, it just crashes and reboots again.

Any idea what could be the problem? Should I reinstall FreeNAS? Should I wipe my drives and reinstall FreeNAS?

Boot device is dead. Get a new one and reinstall freenas. Then upload your config and encryption keys if things are encrypted.

This seems rather strange: I just got the same exact scenario today!
First, messages about afpd being out of asev slots, then a reboot, resulting in similar issues with the boot device.
I have a hard time believing this is just a coincidence...

Boot device failure, if it has a CAM status error message. Replace your boot device.

Looks like a boot device failure...

Do what @SweetAndLow said, except use two USB thumbdrives and install onto both (assuming flash drives)
