This is my proposed build, having had feedback previously. I've decided to go for Xeon, and use an M.2 SSD for the boot drive. Am I right in ignoring the "compatibility" issue, as SuperMicro seems to list the board as supporting M.2?

CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler (£23.97 @ Ebuyer)
Motherboard: Supermicro MBD-X11SSH-F Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard (£234.00)
Memory: Crucial 16GB (1 x 16GB) DDR4-2133 Memory (£150.97 @ Scan.co.uk)
Storage: Western Digital Green 120GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive (£54.29 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: Western Digital Red 4TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive (£133.20 @ Aria PC)

Would you simplify for others to judge by supplying and explaining additional information and links on this matter?

Yeah, but you're getting awfully close to HBA prices.

Oh, would I be better off doing that?

Also, if I use mirrored vdevs (or whatever the Raid 10 equivalent is), am I right in thinking I can grow it 1 pair at a time?

Correct.

Sooner or later most should end up with HBA's ...at 60SUD for the trusty 9211-8i ...you've enabled 8 additional ports.
Aka - your next vdev of raidz2 ;)
