I was trying to play around with FreeNas in VirualBox, I wanted to see if I could get Plexserver setup and working. I been at this for a few days now trying to do research and trying different stuff. I'm giving up now because I don't know what else to try. The issue is that I get everything installed but when I click on the link to launch Plex it does not open but times out. I think that it has something to do with the network interface in the jail. If I run a shell from the jail, I can't ping anything. I can setup a share and map windows to it and copy files to the new share. So the networking is working just not for the jail. Anyone have any ideas of what I am doing wrong? very frustrating.

I figure out the problem. In VirtualBox under the Network for the VM, I did the following for Adapter 1:
1) Enable Network Adapter was checked
2) Attached to: was set to Bridged Adapter
3) Click on Advanced
4) Promiscuous Mode: Allow All <---- This is what was needed

I have the jail set for DHCP.

Any reason as to why you're trying to use the VirtualBox jail when Plex Media Server runs just fine in a standard jail? All you're doing is adding an extra layer of complexity.

It sounded like OP is running Plex, in a jail of a FreeNAS, which in turn is running in VirtualBox.

Oh, sorry. My bad. Should have read the post more closely. If you're just testing FreeNAS and using Jails, you need to enable promiscuous mode in the VM network settings.

You are correct. I was only using VirtualBox for testing. I want to make sure that I knew what I was doing before I did it on my new box. I'm still waiting for parts to come in.

I only want the plexserver to have readonly access to the media files. I was able to do this. I'm excited getting my FreeNas server up and running.
