Subject line says it all. I had issues with updating from 9.3 to 9.10 (as detailed here https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/error-updating-9-3-to-9-10.42733/ ) so I did a clean install of 9.10-STABLE-201606270534 and restored my saved configuration. That configuration set my train to 9.3-STABLE so I set it to 9.10-STABLE and checked for updates. I have one update showing:
freenas-pkg-tools-9.10-STABLE-201606270534-8bc815b059fa92f1c8ba7c7685deacbb -> freenas-pkg-tools-9.10-STABLE-201606072003-56206375162121f339ddd0deef235daa
but when I try to apply the update, I get:
Error: Unable to create new boot environment 9.10-STABLE-201606270534
I've rebooted the system after setting the train to 9.10-STABLE, but this issue persists.

How full is the boot device?

Indeed. That's pretty much the only possible culprit here, a full/busted boot device.

Not full at all.
Size: 14.9 GiB
Used: 618.9 MiB (4%)
In fact, I cloned my 9.10-STABLE-201606270534 BE and successfully booted using the clone.

Ok, try scrubbing the boot device and let's see what happens.

Scrub completed, same error. /var/log/messages reports:
Jul 24 17:48:12 freenas updated.py: [freenasOS.Update:1265] Unable to create new boot environment 9.10-STABLE-201606270534
Jul 24 17:48:15 freenas manage.py: [middleware.exceptions:37] [MiddlewareError: Unable to create new boot environment 9.10-STABLE-201606270534]
I also note there are lots of other errors being logged, including maybe a hundred or more of:
Jul 24 17:48:02 freenas updated.py: [freenasOS.Configuration:624] Unable to load https://web.ixsystems.com/updates/ix_crl.pem: Host web.ixsystems.com returned an invalid certificate ([SSL] internal error (_ssl.c:590))
Jul 24 17:48:02 freenas updated.py: [freenasOS.Configuration:638] Unable to load ['https://web.ixsystems.com/updates/ix_crl.pem']: Host web.ixsystems.com returned an invalid certificate ([SSL] internal error (_ssl.c:590))
Any chance that's related?

This is all very odd. I'll be interested to hear the resolution, assuming one is found.

You should be able to ignore that it thinks it needs to update as you are already on the latest SU. Let us know if it won't update when the next one is released, which should happen sometime this week.

Well, it's looking like a hardware problem might have been the underlying culprit all along. It died completely last night, and as of this AM will not even power on - the fan spins up and the lights come on briefly, then it shuts off with only the network light illuminated. No BIOS messages or other activity on the VGA port. I've started discussing my options for a replacement with iXSystems.

What's the output of the command "beadm list"?

Not much, considering it's stone dead and won't even power on... :) It appears to be a motherboard issue, and it might be the underlying reason behind me being unable to update from 9.3 and even after a clean install of 9.10. I'm working with iXSystems now to replace the unit.

If you have a piece of iXsystems hardware I can give you a tag like "FreeNAS Mini Owner". Just PM me with your serial number. ;)

I have a similar issue. I am on 201606270534 and i see these updates popping up:

docs-9.10-STABLE-201606270534
freebsd-pkgdb-9.10-STABLE-201606270534
freenas-pkg-tools-9.10-STABLE-201606073003
freeNASUI-pkg-tools-9.10-STABLE-201606270534

When trying to update, i get the same message.

EDIT: I now see the versions are the same! Why is it trying to update?

EDIT: Found another one here: https://forums.freenas.org/index.ph...rsion-freenas-9-10-stable-201606270534.44617/

I'm getting the same thing, and from the command-line:

Seems I have the same problem with this new update. Plenty of place on my SSD.

Not isolated its popping up everywhere in pending updates but if you manually check there nothing.

It seems there a bug causing the pending update system to fail to see that its already at the version its saying there a update for..

Nothing major just a annoyance at this point.

Update:
The bug is now showing when you click check now and is tell you there a update but its the versions which is already installed.
