i previously had problems with the ups driver getting stale. the way to fix this was to set the maxage (something like 25). the problem was the only way to set the maxage was in the upsd.conf which was not possible in the ups service - you needed a script which was run during booting.
Now in - FreeNAS-9.10-STABLE-201605240427 (64fcd8e) - you can edit the upsd.conf in the ups service.
i have tested this and i can confirm you do not need to run a script.
