Note: my FN 8.0.1 RC1 system was updated from a 8.0.1 b4 config file.

If the button "Set Permission Recursively" is checked when setting permissions for a volume, modes (owner, group, other) are reset to FreeNAS defaults. Nested folders/files are updated correctly, though.

Setting volume permissions a second time without checking "Set Permission Recursively" works correctly for the volume root (permission modes stick the way you want 'em).

Not a huge bug, but something to fix if someone gets bored. :)

I have exactly the same issue as you with 8.0.2-RELEASE.
Is there a solution ?

Enable Settings -> Advanced -> Show traceback, do the operation again and paste the error output (in 8.0.2-RELEASE, we don't need it for anything different)

William, with traceback enabled the UI does not bomb as it was doing in 8.01. It just sits there forever and after 1+ hour I cancelled the operation. Changing permission non recursively is ok and chmodding -R 777 from shell is ok as well.
