Hi experts!

I'm a bit of a rookie, so be gentle! I've read a few guides and other threads in here to repair my pending sectors on ada1. But following them doesnt seem to work. Can anyone help? Am I doing it correctly?

SMART says I have 26 pending sectors on ada1.

So I tried the dd method of writing to that block a few times over without success.

Code:
root@freenas:~ # dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/ada1 bs=4096 count=1 seek=3074734 conv=noerror,sync
1+0 records in
1+0 records out
4096 bytes transferred in 0.000242 secs (16960311 bytes/sec)
root@freenas:~ # dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/ada1 bs=4096 count=1 seek=3074735 conv=noerror,sync
1+0 records in
1+0 records out
4096 bytes transferred in 0.000242 secs (16960382 bytes/sec)
root@freenas:~ # dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/ada1 bs=4096 count=1 seek=3074728 conv=noerror,sync
1+0 records in
1+0 records out
4096 bytes transferred in 0.000244 secs (16756805 bytes/sec)
root@freenas:~ #

It seems to write the data ok... but then I scrub the pool and still have the same pending sectors? Am I doing something wrong here?

Thanks!

Code:
root@freenas:~ # smartctl -a /dev/ada1

Am I doing something wrong here?
Yes, in that you aren't immediately replacing the disk. In addition to the pending sectors, it has 48 already reallocated, and it's failed every SMART self-test in its log. Replace the disk.

That drive is toast, replace it.

Thanks for the replies.
So can you be a bit more specific why it’s toast? I thought pending or offline sectors are fairly normal for a a HDD?

it's failed every SMART self-test in its log.

Where does it say that sorry?

Is this bit misleading me:
Code:
SMART overall-health self-assessment test result: PASSED

Okay to be honest not sure what I'm looking at in the smart results, but I'll take your word for it.

Given the drive is not SMR, and newer WD Reds have now been found to be SMR which don't play nice in RAID, should I avoid replacing this with an SMR 3TB WD Red and maybe go for an Seagate Ironwolf 3TB instead?

Also, I assume if I buy a larger drive e.g. 6TB I can slowly upgrade the array over time if I buy 3 x 6TB drives to rplace the current 3 x 3TB? I dont have spare SATA ports so would need to do it one by one.

The 21 lines that say "Completed: read failure" weren't a clue?

I thought I'd seen in that thread that the 3TB disks were still CMR, but I haven't been following that closely. Seagate says the Ironwolf series are and will continue to be CMR, so those would be safe too.
