First Build and I'm limited to old gear.

I've searched the forums and think I need to find better gear but wanted to ask here first.

I have two server systems I got for free a Dell R710 and an Intel S1200BTL with a decent but old case.

I have two new 4tb WD NAS 5400rpm drives and two 1tb SSDs.

My question is the S1200BTL even worth attempting? All the posts I found in the forum were pretty old and people were not having a good time with it.

The R710 is too power hungry for my needs and I kind of wanted to use it for a XCP-NG server that wouldn't be powered on very much.

I also have an old Dell 7010 desk top and could get an HBA for it.

I've been trying to do this for over a year and don't have a lot of money to through at it.

As a trial build, yes; as a reliable system I don't think so. You can find newer server-grade hardware on the used market for a good price.
All in all only you can decide what do you want; if you have the hardware I'd say try it first and then evaluate.

Thanks Davvo. That was kind of my thought. Atleast I can finally experience setting up a system and if it sucks it sucks. I'm only out a little time.
