Then you can get (x4) or (x8) of these:
https://www.newegg.com/intel-d3-s4610-480gb/p/0D9-002V-003V4?Item=0D9-002V-003V4

Setup them up in Striped Mirrors for performance. Usable space for (x4) would be about 0.8TB (x8) would be about 1.5TB working space.
You should be able to easily fill 10Gb with (x8) and likely come close with (x4).

I was thinking about Samsung EVO 1TB SSD's for the bay.

Also a couple smaller ones (250gig) for boot (mirrored) in the chassis or satadom (much smaller 32GB or 64 and mirrored), but I have the space in the fractal might as well go SSD's for boot.

update: those Intels do look a bit better now that I checked out the specs :)

thinking with 8 x 3.5 spinning rust and 8x2.5 SSD's (for bays) and 2x2.5 SSD's (boot), plus the cpu and fans, I am thinking I might need a 1kw power supply now. thoughts?

ssd's dont use hardly any power.
There are power calculators on google. i would use one to see how much it says your system will need. i am running a 56w cpu with 8 3.5 inch hdd 4 or 5 fans and it pulls 60w from the wall at idel and about 80 during a scrub. 1k is way over kill.

the calc does not work at the moment you switch on the computer.

the recommendations in the forum are based on that small moment to avoid harm to the system. it is not the idle time that counts.

CPU 120w
MoBo 50w
Ram 10w
HDD 8x 10w
SSD 8x 5w (up to much more if PCIe)
fans 5-15w -> those 180mm fans I recommended using 5w each
HBA 10-20w
-> 330w is aprox. power consumption at bootup in my opinion. switch on peak can be much higher. I personally would not go below 600w

maybe wait for further feedback to the psu.

+1 for the seasonic brand. I have one as well and I like it

NB: most effective is a PSU at 30% below max, longest lifetime you have below 50% load.

Hey folks, kinda got side tracked here. So I started this build, after my old one died...but had to not do all of it...however it's up and running and humming along nicely with new drives, hba, much better processor and in a wonderful case. Thank you all for the help with this. I now have to look around how to move from a usb boot drive to a real SSD.
