Faster NIC for VM

Greetings,

I was wondering if it were possible to "give" an Ubuntu VM a faster NIC? Currently, it has a 1GBE NIC attached. I'm transferring files from the VM to a network share that is hosted on the same server as the VM and transfers are, well, too slow.

If I attach one of the physical 10GBE ports, will it dedicate that port to the VM only? If so, I cannot do it that way because it would break apps and what not, I think.

How do I give the Ubuntu VM, say, a (virtual?) 10gig NIC? Do I change the NIC to VirtIO and will that do it? Suppose I could trial-and-error it but figured I'd ask...

TIA
