External SAS connector

So I have a Question. I have an LSI 9217-4I4E that has an external SAS connection. Was wondering if it is possible to get an external expansion drive say with 4 drive slots and will it work with TrueNas

Yes, though they are a bit rare. Even eSATA enclosures are a bit rare.

Here is one:

Note that these don't use SAS expanders, so you can't use the 8 bay one with your existing SAS card. Or to be more precise, you can use only 4 bays of the 8 bay enclosure with your existing 4 external port SAS card.

Further, if you use SATA drives, try and keep the cable as short as possible. Like 1/2 meter. SAS disks can take longer cables, so don't get confused.
