Experience switching existing time machine dataset from AFP to SMB?

Hello,

I've upgraded from 9.10 to 11.3 and am revisiting the Time Machine setup. What is the community's experience with migrating an existing Time Machine dataset that is shared via AFP to SMB? My datasets have been created on 9.10 with the Share type set to Mac. My time machine backup has a long history and I would like to continue using it after switching to SMB.

Is this a seamless process, i.e. remove the AFP share and add an SMB share? Is there more to in on the dataset level?

I can only say that Time Machine works reliably with SMB with Mac OS up to 10.14 (Mojave). I have yet to test 10.15 (Catalina).
But I created a new dataaset and nuked the old one after a few weeks of successful backups.
