Good evening,
Right now I have a perfectly functioning FreeNAS running several jails and doing everything I need it to. I am looking toward the future, and planning to move into a rack mount setup to put all the various things I got going on into one location. I need some advice.
I don't want to mess around with reinstalling and configuring things. I plan to just move my existing NAS hardware into a new case and carry on. What I'd ultimately like to do is expand my ability to add more drives to the system in other rack mount cases, and use my existing machine as the head unit which manages it all. I purchased a Rosewill case which has three sets of four hot-swappable cages, and I'd like that case to be specifically for adding three additional pools of 4 drives each. My existing pool would be transitioned to just managing storage and jails, and the data pools I'd use would be on the three additional pools created by the new case.
This will all be done in a rack mounted cage... So what are the options?
Can I just purchase expansion cards and connect the cables to drives in the additional case (or cases down the road)? What would I need and how to go about it properly. It would all need to power on properly, etc... Any advice would be appreciated on what to buy, and how to setup... pitfalls, etc..
Thank you, and Happy Thanksgiving to all..
Steve
