Yeah it would be two individual Intel 750's. Re-reading it it does sound like I'm talking about the same device. That would be bad.

Just an update to this:

I ordered and received another 128gb's of ram for the system, which are currently enduring a weeks worth of memtest in another system. I have decided to hold off on installing the l2arc yet and will see if the 256gb's of ram will hold it through; though I have a 1.2tb Intel 750 ready if it's needed.

I've ordered two 200gb Intel S3700's for a mirrored slog device.

The question I have is, at what point should I start considering the l2arc or what metric should I use to determine if it's needed? Arc hit ratio%?

From my understanding (which is always questionable), look to L2ARC after getting way up there in RAM and if the following conditions exist:
  • Server is pretty busy with heavy Reads
  • ARC Hit Ratio is low
Of course, I am not up there in that class *yet*. ;)

Thanks for the info! Seems that would have been the case.

The ESXI system up and running connected via 10Gb to an iSCSI data store on the nas right now. No VM's are spun up yet till the SLOG devices arrive and the ram is done with the memtest.

Updates will come through with how things are going.

  • 10:46PM up 9 days, 8:49, 1 user, load averages: 0.79, 0.57, 0.50
  • 46.7GiB / 920GiB (Jails)
  • 1.59TiB / 21.8TiB (Tank)
  • 982MiB / 14.5GiB (freenas-boot)
  • 229.33GiB (MRU: 123.57GiB, MFU: 105.76GiB) / 256.00GiB
  • Hit ratio -> 64.45% (higher is better)
  • Prefetch -> 57.53% (higher is better)
  • Hit MFU:MRU -> 80.86%:18.61% (higher ratio is better)
  • Hit MRU Ghost -> 0.00% (lower is better)
  • Hit MFU Ghost -> 0.03% (lower is better)
Well there are the ARC stats with 256GB's of RAM. I have the two SLOG devices installed. Get 150MB writes from the VM's on the ESXI servers and 350-800MB reads. Needless to say I'm quite happy with the performance. The Hit Ratio is pretty ugly, so I might consider installing the L2ARC device, but performance has been quite good regardless.

I only have 3 Win 10 VM's, two Ubuntu Servers, a Windows Server 2012R2 VM that isn't doing much, and a Proxmox VM that isn't doing anything, going right now. Will continue to update as things progress.

get some fragmentation on that pool and see if the performance is still good.

Curiously low hit ratio for only a few vm's though.
