I have successfully tested the backing up of my data, via Rsync, to my friend's NAS (Synology DSM5.1). And his data to my home-built NAS (running FreeNAS 9.3). I use VPN to connect end to end, prior to running rsync.

I trust my friend but I can't just leave the backup, unencrypted, on his NAS. And he would be thinking the same. Kinda like saying we trust each other but not necessarily people who may need to use our NASes.

So my question is - What would be the best way to encrypt our backup data on each other NAS while still able to use rsync for efficiency.

Many thanks.

That depends on what you expect the attack vector to be.

The only real encryption FreeNAS offers is whole-pool. So anything else would require using other software like TrueCrypt.

Hm... I used TrueCrypt previously. I was impressed with it. Let me digest your suggestion in terms of its 'logistics'.

PS. I read somewhere recently that people behind TrueCrypt have stopped developing it. But for my needs, it's sufficient as is.
