For some reason the smart service will not start, I'm guessing this is due to the drives being SAS drives rather than SATA or IDE. After I pulled a drive the system still worked fine so the underlying hardware raid 5 is doing it's job. I did get a daily email through with reference to the HD being pulled (simulating a failure) and then a rebuild. Maybe I should run a cron job checking the logs for keywords and if it finds any just email the log out straight away?
