Drive Failure Notfications

I have FreeNas 8.03 P1 installed on a server with hardware raid, is it possible to get a report via email when a disc in the array dies?

turn on smart monitoring and have the root email setup then add, -m root, to the addition smart parameters in the disks section

For some reason the smart service will not start, I'm guessing this is due to the drives being SAS drives rather than SATA or IDE. After I pulled a drive the system still worked fine so the underlying hardware raid 5 is doing it's job. I did get a daily email through with reference to the HD being pulled (simulating a failure) and then a rebuild. Maybe I should run a cron job checking the logs for keywords and if it finds any just email the log out straight away?
